This [the French Ballet] school is like our French spirit. I like to compare it to French philosophy. Our teaching is Cartesian but at the same time we are Latins. The French school is that mixture of rigor, discipline, royalty, very geometric lines, associated with the Latin side, rebellious, eloquent. We do not have the same flamboyance as the Russians, our technique is less athletic than theirs, and our rigor is less strict than that of the English. This royalism combined with the revolutionary character of the French is present in our dance, our architecture, our music. Our dance corresponds to our culture and we can bring it closer to literature and French theater. The richness of his vocabulary is immense. It must be remembered that the codification was born in France. Louis XIV had the strength and intelligence to structure, and that too is very French." - Elisabeth Platel, Paris Opera Ballet School Director
